Absolutely Obknoxious’ Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 3

After 3 weeks, it seems that the rankings are finally settling down from week 1…

1. Texas Last week: 1 (Even)

Texas beat Texas Tech in Austin, but not the mud hole some Longhorn fans predicted. The 34-24 win kept Texas at the top of the poll, but the margin they held narrowed. Colt McCoy’s overall game play was closer to his sophomore year than his junior season, throwing a pair of interceptions that bounced off the outstretched hands of his receivers. Tre Newton emerged as a player who needs to get the ball as much as possible, while Sergio Kindle finally showed up in a game, with his helmet.

2. Oklahoma Last week: 5 (+3)

The Sooners made the biggest jump this week, and have recovered from the BYU loss. QB Landry Jones tied an Oklahoma record with 6 TD passes, easing the loss of Heisman-winner Sam Bradford. The defense held a good Tulsa offense scoreless, thanks to the stellar play of the linebackers. Ryan Reynolds and Travis Lewis combined for 3 of Oklahoma’s 6 sacks. With the 45-0 victory, Oklahoma has flexed their muscle and is gearing up for their week seven showdown with Texas. Continue reading

Absolutely Obknoxious’ Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 2

Remember, these rankings begin in week 1, so there is no preseason basis to this at all. Every ranking is based on how the team has fared throughout the season.

1. Texas Last week: 1 (Even)

Texas has the Big 12 top scoring offense at an even 50 ppg. They struggled mightily in the 1st half against Wyoming, but came on strong in the 2nd half to win by 31 points. Texas hosts #4 Texas Tech on Saturday at 7 pm

2. Kansas Last week: 4 (+2)

Kansas jumped up to 2nd place after the loss by Oklahoma State and a sub-par performance from Missouri. Kansas went to El Paso and easily defeated UTEP, 34-7. RB Jake Sharp scored 3 touchdowns, and WR Dezmon Briscoe caught 8 passes for 154 yards. Kansas hosts Duke in a battle of basketball schools.

3. Nebraska Last week: 5 (+2)

Nebraska QB Zach Lee leads the Big 12 with a 186.4 QB efficiency rating through 2 weeks. After crushing Florida Atlantic in week 1, Nebraska repeated their performance against a veteran Arkansas State squad, winning 38-9.

4. Texas Tech Last week: 8 (+4)

Taylor Potts rebounded from a dismal starting debut to throw for 456 yards and 7 TDs against Rice. Overall, Tech QBs threw 8 TDs, while the defense recorded 6 sacks on the trio of Rice signal callers. After entering halftime with a 14-3 lead, the Red Raiders poured it on in the 2nd half, outscoring the owls 41-7. Texas Tech travels to Austin to battle #1 Texas on Saturday. Continue reading

Absolutely Obknoxious’ Big 12 Power Rankings: Week 1

So we are through an entire week of college football. The Big 12 managed to win 10 of 12 games (thanks Oklahoma and Colorado) on the weekend. This power ranking is based on in-season performance. I don’t care where someone was ranked in the preseason, I am only ranking them on how they have played, with wins being a large factor. Since its only week 1, there will be a lot of teams that are better than their ranking, or vice versa. Continue reading
